Case Overview
As the Sultanate of Oman advances its national digital transformation agenda, reliable and high-speed broadband connectivity has become a critical foundation for economic growth and digital inclusion. With the nationwide rollout of 5G services, operators are seeking efficient ways to deliver consistent user experiences while maximizing network performance and long-term scalability.
At the forefront of this evolution is Omantel, Oman's leading telecommunications operator. As part of its 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) strategy, Omantel focuses on delivering stable, high-capacity wireless broadband services to both residential and enterprise users-particularly in scenarios where fiber deployment may be limited or less efficient.
Turing this strategy into reality requires not only advanced 5G networks, but also operator-grade access solutions and trusted technology partners. Wewins, working in collaboration with Aurora tech, supported Omantel's 5G FWA deployment by delivering outdoor-focused CPE solutions designed for reliable performance in real-world environments.
A Strategic, Outdoor-First Approach to 5G FWA
When evaluating 5G FWA deployment models, Omantel adopted a clear, performance-driven strategy. While indoor CPE solutions offer faster self-installation and lower upfront complexity, Omantel identified outdoor CPE as the primary access solution for achieving consistent throughput, higher spectral efficiency, and long-term service stability.
Outdoor CPEs deliver superior radio performance by:
- Reducing wall and window attenuation
- Improving link budgets
- Allowing precise alignment with serving cells
This approach significantly enhances spectral efficiency and enables higher user density per site—key factors for scaling 5G FWA services efficiently.
Indoor CPEs continue to be deployed selectively in areas with favorable radio conditions, while outdoor CPEs form the backbone of Omantel's nationwide 5G FWA offering.
Operator-Grade Outdoor CPE Platform
To support this outdoor-first stRategy, Omantel selected Wewins' 5G Outdoor CPE (O021)—marketed as “O2 Pro” within the project—for large-scale deployment and professional installation.
Designed for demanding outdoor environments, the O021 features:
- A high-gain directional antenna system with 4×4 MIMO, enabling stable long-distance connectivity
- Support for dual-mode 5G (Sub-6 GHz and mmWave)
- Broad multi-band compatibility for flexible spectrum utilization
These capabilities allow Omantel to adapt deployments across diverse coverage conditions while maintaining consistent performance at scale.
Its rugged IP67-rated enclosure ensure reliable operation under extreme heat, dust, heavy rain, and strong winds—critical for long-term outdoor installations in Oman's climate.
Following commercial rollout, the solution has become a core outdoor access component supporting Omantel's large-scale 5G FWA broadband services.
Flexible Architecture for Efficient Deployment
Beyond performance, the deployed solution offers flexibility in system architecture. The outdoor unit can be integrated with a wide range of indoor Wi-Fi routes as part of a combined ODU + IDU solution, allowing Omantel to tailor installations to specific site requirements.
Additional deployment advantages include:
- Power over Ethernet (PoE) support
- Pole and wall mounting options
- Professional installation workflows
These features simplify rollout, reduce on-site complexity, and ensure optimal device placement from day one—improving both deployment efficiency and long-term service quality.
Supporting Oman’s 5G-Driven Digital Future
Through close collaboration between Omantel, Wewins and Aurora Tech, this project demonstrates how operator insight and purpose-built outdoor CPE design can translate 5G capabilities into reliable, real-world broadband services.
By prioritizing outdoor CPE as a core component of its 5G FWA strategy, Omantel is enhancing network utilization, improving service consistency, and building a scalable foundation for future digital services across residential, enterprise, and industrial use cases.
A Partnership Focused on Real-World Performance
This collaboration reflects a shared commitment to delivering carrier-grade, scalable 5G solutions that meet evolving network demands. By combining rugged device engineering with flexible deployment and customization capabilities, Wewins continues to support Omantel in delivering next-generation connectivity with confidence and efficiency.
